The purpose of the program is to develop and carry out animal-human interface activities related to influenza and other zoonotic diseases. Activities within this project will serve to identify and monitor the risks of and risk factors for cross-species transmission of influenza virus and other pathogens; and to use knowledge gained to support recommendations for better surveillance, response, and control efforts of influenza and other zoonotic diseases, in both humans and animals, with the aim of improving both animal and public health.

The NCIRD Influenza Division (ID) is seeking a cooperative agreement with The Gorgas Memorial Institute for Health Studies (GMI) to strengthen the capacity in Panama and the countries of Central America region, to detect, describe, and conduct studies on transmission, disease, and economic burden of influenza and emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases of public health importance and to evaluate new diagnostics, vaccines, risk assessment methods, and other interventions that may offer approaches toward their prevention or treatment.
